What are the primary symptoms of cylinder head problems?

A cylinder head is an extremely critical and necessary component of any automobile engine. Because of the complexity of the components of a cylinder head, repairing or replacing a cracked or broken cylinder head can be costly, depending on your vehicle’s engine and where you choose to have it serviced.

To save you time and money in the long run, we’ve put together a simple introduction to what a diesel engine cylinder head is and how to identify the most typical faults discovered in its components.

What is the purpose of a cylinder head?

A vehicle’s internal combustion engine has numerous cylinders, the top of which is known as the cylinder head; components of a cylinder head include multiple valves, springs, lifters, and the main combustion chamber. The cylinder head controls the flow within the cylinders by allowing air and fuel in and exhausting gasses out.

A cylinder head closes the combustion chamber and works closely with the head gasket to seal the vehicle’s cylinders. Additionally, a diesel engine cylinder head plays an important role in keeping engine components cool by carrying coolant into the engine block.

The most common symptoms of cylinder head problems are:

    1. Overheat

Overheating is a common indicator of a problem with a diesel engine’s cylinder head. As the heat puts strain on the cylinder, the components inside the internal combustion engine overheat because they cannot carry coolant through and hence distort in shape. To avoid damage to the cylinder head, keep your radiator full and in good shape to prevent overheating.

    2. Poor engine performance.

Poor engine performance is a strong indication of a cylinder head problem. This issue could be caused by the diesel engine’s cylinder head failing or cracking, preventing the engine from burning gasoline efficiently. This bad performance will be immediately obvious because the engine will not be operating as smoothly, and you may need to restart the car more often.

    3. Oil leaks.

If you notice oil pouring from your vehicle, this could be the consequence of a broken cylinder head. Even if you can’t spot a leak and the oil light appears on the dashboard, inspect the engine for any indication of oil around the cylinder head. Because a diesel engine’s cylinder head contains oil, cracking it may allow the oil to flow out.

    4. Drop in coolant level

A decline in engine coolant level may result in a leak, which is immediately identifiable and visible on the cylinder head. A crack in the diesel engine’s cylinder head could generate a leak, which could lead to longer-term problems as the engine heats up due to a lack of coolant.

    5. Exhaust smoke indicates fractured cylinder heads.

The crack and damage are likely to be far more serious in this case. If this has occurred, you should strive to get this problem rectified as quickly as possible by a professional, to ensure no more damage is made.

How Can I Replace Damaged Cylinder Head Components?

Before just replacing broken parts and reassembling the engine, it is critical to identify the source of the problem and resolve it. Once you’ve found the problem, please contact the Foxwood Diesel team to replace or repair damaged cylinder head components.

With our extensive understanding of diesel parts, we provide highly effective reconditioning and rebuilding solutions at our engine machining center for worn-out engines that require professional care. Please provide us with your engine number and the specific difficulties you’ve encountered so that we can discover the source of the problem. Check out our blog for more information and guidance on diesel engine problems.
